About the Book:

Colors & Markings of U. S. Navy F-14 Tomcats, Part 2:  Pacific Coast Squadrons is the third book in Detail & Scale’s Digital Colors & Markings Series covering iconic military aircraft of the 20th Century.  It is the follow-on to the highly successful Colors & Markings of U. S. Navy F-14 Tomcats, Part 1:  Atlantic Coast Squadrons.  Between 1984 and 1994, Detail & Scale produced 24 titles in our Colors & Markings Series of books, but the series was discontinued because of limitations then existing in the printing business.  With the advent of digital publications, this acclaimed series has returned, and this third volume in the series shows the benefits of digital publishing at its best.  Our second book on the F-14 provides enhanced coverage of every active and Reserve fighter squadron that flew the Tomcat with the Pacific Fleet, the adversary units that flew the aircraft, and the various west coast Navy flight test units, along with NASA, that flew Grumman’s swing-wing fighter.  The book begins with an in-depth look at the stencils and standard markings displayed on the three primary color schemes used on the F-14.  Colors & Markings of U. S. Navy F-14 Tomcats, Part 2:  Pacific Coast Squadrons comprehensively covers this iconic Navy aircraft with detailed historical notes, over 700 color photographs, 9 full color profiles, and 16 enhanced drawings of informational and emergency markings from official Navy technical documents.  Combined with Colors & Markings of U. S. Navy F-14 Tomcats, Part 1:  Atlantic Coast Squadrons, this two-part reference is the most comprehensive treatment ever published of the markings used on the F-14 Tomcat during its more than 34 years of operational use, and provides the reader with over 1,400 color photographs, 35 color profiles, and nearly two dozen technical drawings.

Book Features:

Features of Detail & Scale's newest digital publication, Colors & Markings of U. S. Navy F-14 Tomcats, Part 2: Pacific Coast Squadrons include:

  1. A detailed look at the "standard" markings applied on the production line to the F-14 Tomcat and a complete depiction of all of the technical, informational, and emergency stenciling seen on many F-14s. But as it turns out there really was no "standard" once the aircraft was in operational units, and variations are illustrated in photographs.
  2. A chapter with separate sections on each of the 15 active Pacific Fleet fighter squadrons that flew the F-14 over its 34-year career, with hundreds of full color photographs covering the chronology of the markings used by each squadron from when it transitioned to the Tomcat until the unit was either disestablished or transitioned to the F/A-18 Super Hornet.  A unit history is also provided for each squadron.
  3. A chapter with sections on the two Pacific Fleet Reserve fighter squadrons that flew the Tomcat.
  4. Detailed historical notes and photographic coverage of the Adversary Tomcat units and the 7 test & evaluation facilities and units that flew the F-14 in various test programs and evaluations.
  5. Over 700 high resolution color photographs, 9 full color profiles, and 16 technical drawings in a complete guide to Tomcat stenciling.

REVIEWS

IPMS

Summary: "In terms of content, this is an exceptional publication; there is a wealth of information about the color and markings of Pacific F-14 squadrons.  This volume is well written with an engaging style.  The artwork is spectacular and the photograph resolution is superb." ..."Colors & Markings Series Digital Volume 3 has my highest recommendation.  I cannot see how anyone can justify not having this publication if he or she has any interest in the F-14, whether for model building or for historical purposes."

Hyperscale

Summary: "The amount of photos, details about the units and the paint schemes are in keeping with the great tradition of Detail & Scale publications.  This volume, along with the first one, are essential reference material for the modeler and historian.  If you love the F-14 Tomcat then you’ll NEED to add this to your digital library.  The inexpensive price will certainly be attractive to everyone. "
